Church and Community Ministry

Helping churches find ways to get off the pews and serve their communities, reaching out to those who may not feel welcome in church is the focus of the various components of Church and Community Ministry (CCM).  The CCM Team is composed of:   Betty Morgan-Newell, Chair; and Chandra Robinson of Pine Lake Baptist; James Irvin, North Peachtree Baptist; Jack McCormick and Sharon Fields-McCormick, MSC Missionaries NAMB;  Jonathan Rich, 1027 Church.

   Church & Community Ministry includes:

  • Health Ministry,
  • Construction Ministry and  Disaster Relief, and
  • Ministry Partnerships.
Construction Ministry/Disaster Relief meets needs in the Atlanta area as well as throughout Georgia and the US. During the past three summers, AASBC’s Construction Ministry Director coordinated volunteers for the construction of a child development center for  Moose Creek Baptist Church in North Pole, Alaska. Since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the Association has led 30 mission teams to the Gulf Coast to help families rebuild their homes and their lives. In addition, time was spent in South Texas following Hurricane Ike.

The Association returned to Moose Creek Baptist Church in North Pole, Alaska, in 2010 to continue work on the child development center.  Teams from First Baptist Atlanta, North Peachtree Baptist and Crossroads Baptist (Social Circle, GA) shared their time and talents.  Several teams are planning to go in 2011.

The Health Ministry was established by a grant from the Gerogia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation in 2008 to provide health screenings which include glucose, cholesterol, vision, skin cancer, body mass index, depression and anxiety.   Initially offered to the motorcycling population at biking events then to other populations and sites, the screenings open the door for sharing Christ.

Great Physician Servants (GPS) Health Ministry helped churches establish health ministries teaching churches to:
  • provide health education and screening to their congregations,
  • complement their outreach activities within their communities,
  • reach the lost with the healing Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Through involvement in community health events, area church members can pray with participants, build relationships by engaging them in educational and screening events, sow the seeds of the Gospel and share in the Harvest. Just as the North American Mission Board’s GPS Initiative and electronic GPS navigational systems provide direction, the Great Physician Servants Health Ministries can guide people to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

Due to the lack of funds for continuation, the AASBC's Health Ministry ends this year.  Great Physician Servants Churches will continue their own outreach programs.

Ministry Partnerships:
The AASBC established the Atlanta Pregnancy Resource Center in 2006 to serve individuals facing unplanned pregnancies through consultation, ultrasound services, post-abortion support and childbirth/parenting education programs.

To address human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children, the AASBC is partnering with  Living Water for Girls, a ministry which provides assessment/emergency services, professional mental and physical health services, individualized educational services and valuable life skills training to help rebuild the lives of girls ages 12-17.  Our churches are involved with the home in various ways.
